13th Street Cabernet/Merlot 2010: Try alongside a tourtière with a light pastry crust: This wine's alluring smokiness, dark fruit and grilled pepper notes will sing with the gaminess of the tourtière, and the meat will soften the wine's youthful tannins perfectly. 13th Street Gamay Noir 2011: It's a fairly light pink-purple in appearance, but it's very substantial in flavour and texture. Both are characterized by a certain funkiness, and there's a lot of grapey-winey stuff going on in the flavours. It's a very attractive off-beat style of gamay, another to add to the range that this variety offers. As I keep saying, gamay could be a great grape for Ontario. 13th Street is behind it, and has planted more gamay vines. Good for them! Score - 90-93. 13th Street Merlot 2010: Stop the presses! 13th Street has themselves a real winner here - not like it's their first though. This all estate Merlot has a lot of firsts under its belt: first machine harvest for the winery, first second tier Merlot and first big bruiser red from 2010. I was surprised that no oak was used, but 4-5 weeks of skin contact has given this wine big flavour and power on the palate. The nose is loaded with spiced blackberry and cinnamon-raspberries while the palate has a lovely spiced quality with good tannins, cassis and blueberry skin notes. Only 500 cases were made and I would think they'll go quickly based on the price ... Score - 4 1/2 Stars (out of 5). (Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Aug. 11, 2011) |
