13th Street Merlot 2010: Stop the presses! 13th Street has themselves a real winner here - not like it's their first though. This all estate Merlot has a lot of firsts under its belt: first machine harvest for the winery, first second tier Merlot and first big bruiser red from 2010. I was surprised that no oak was used, but 4-5 weeks of skin contact has given this wine big flavour and power on the palate. The nose is loaded with spiced blackberry and cinnamon-raspberries while the palate has a lovely spiced quality with good tannins, cassis and blueberry skin notes. Only 500 cases were made and I would think they'll go quickly based on the price ... Score - 4 1/2 Stars (out of 5). (Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Aug. 11, 2011)

Alfiere Rosso Merlot 2007: Wine Style: Red Full-bodied. Appearance: dense purple. Nose: spicy, floral, cherry. Taste: full-bodied, lovely mouth feel, flavourful spicy cherry/plum; firmly structured, easy drinking. Score - 4 Stars (out of 5). (Tony Aspler, tonyaspler.com, March 10, 2011)

Angels Gate Merlot Vqa: Bright ruby red colour; aromas of blackcurrant and vanilla with notes of plum, and spice; dry, medium bodied, with juicy red berry fruit flavours, with a touch of spice and rounded tannins on the finish.

Barefoot Merlot: Ruby red in colour, the nose reveals red berry, boysenberry, chocolate and anise. Medium-bodied, fruity, slightly tannic on the finish.
