Antolini Recioto Della Valpolicella Classico 2009: Recioto predates Amarone by centuries, but until the final processes is made in the identical manner and with the same grapes (mostly Corvina and Rondinella). The grapes are mat-dried following harvest, and regulations stipulate that Amarones cannot be pressed before December 1st after harvest; Reciotos not until January 1st. That extra month creates even sweeter grapes. Producers tend not to oak age the wines as it leads to an unwanted oxidative character. This richly plummy and almost chocolaty version is great on its own, or serve with duck in a plum sauce. Tags: Blend - Other, Corvina Blend, Dessert Wine, Wine |

Beringer Nightingale Botrytised Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc 2006: Full gold. High-toned aromas of apricot, honeycomb and barley sugar, plus a hint of sultana raisin. Sweet and unctuous but with unexpected lift to the honeyed, pure botrytis flavors. A note of nutty oak complements the wine without overwhelming its fruit. This suave midweight finishes with a savory quality to go with its dried fruit sweetness. This is made by spraying botrytis spores onto perfectly mature fruit, notes winemaker Hook, who suggests pairing it with blue cheeses or warm roasted pistachios. Score - 91. Buller Victoria Tawny: True to its name, this is a deep tawny coloured fortified wine with aromas of dried apricot, orange peel, dates, raisin, fig and pecan nuts. Sweet, but not cloying at all with excellent aroma replays on the palate. There's some tannin here suggesting it can still age well in a cellar (2-3 years), but why wait when it's this tasty? Try it with mature cheeses or pecan pie. (VINTAGES panel, Jan. 2012) Tags: Dessert Wine, Wine |

Casa Al Vento Vin Santo Del Chianti 2005: Though Vin Santo, or Holy Wine, can be found throughout Italy, Tuscany is generally accepted to be the traditional home of this amber-coloured dessert wine. Rich aromas of raisins, dried apricots, almonds, apples and flowers are all enthusiastically replayed on the palate with an added tangy citrus note. Ideal after dinner, and for dunking biscotti cookies. (VINTAGES panel, April 2012) Tags: Dessert Wine, Malvasia, Varietal - Other, Wine |
