Today is International Whiskey Day! Or wait, is it International “Whisky” Day?! Catch the difference? Regardless, today is the day we celebrate the rich history and undeniable taste of this iconic spirit.

The origin of whiskey dates back to over 1000 year ago when distillation made the migration from mainland Europe into Scotland and Ireland via traveling monks. The Scottish and Irish monasteries, lacking the vineyards and grapes of the continent, turned to fermenting grain mash. The result? The first distillations of modern whisky.

“Whisk(e)y is liquid sunshine.” Celebrate the water of life today! The term whisk(e)y is an anglicization of the Classical Gaelic word “uisce” meaning ‘water.’  Distilled alcohol was known in Latin as aqua vitae meaning ‘water of life.’

So wait, is it "whisky" or "whiskey"? Well, put simply, whisky is from Scotland and whiskey is from Ireland. The difference comes from the translation of words from the Scottish and Irish Gaelic forms. In the late 1800s, Scottish whisky was considered to be of poor quality so the Irish producers wanted to differentiate their product.

In modern times, "whiskey" refers to whiskeys made in the US and Ireland, whereas "whisky" refers to whiskies from Scotland, Japan, Canada, and the rest of the world.

Different regions have different standards and laws to regulate whisky production, thus due to regional differences, the spelling can give you an idea on how the whisky will taste.

Whiskey and whisky are both distilled from fermented grain mash. The major difference between the two is that whiskey is made mostly from corn, while whisky is made mostly from barley. Because of this key ingredient distinction, whiskey tends to be sweeter than whisky.

So there you have it! Now you can impress your friends with whiskey knowledge the next time you're out for a dram. And on International Whiskey Day, don't forget to enjoy your favorite whiskey neat, on the rocks, or in a classic cocktail. Sláinte!
