Irish coffee is a classic cocktail that typically consists of hot coffee, Irish whiskey, and sugar, stirred, and topped with cream. The Irish Coffee was created in the winter of 1943 by Joe Sheridan, a humble chef at the airport in Foynes Port near Limerick, Ireland.

Legend goes that Joe whipped up a drink to help the passengers forget about the cold and their canceled flight when one of the passengers asked if they were drinking Brazilian coffee, to which he replied “No, that’s Irish Coffee.” Irish Coffee became a huge success and an airport specialty. Word spread and luckily Irish Coffee was introduced to the United States and beyond in 1952.

  • Start with a warm glass, fill 2/3rds full of freshly brewed coffee.
  • Stir in a heaping teaspoon of sugar.
  • Add 1 ounce of Irish whiskey.
  • Adding the cream, so that it floats, is the tricky part. Whipping cream is recommended  (not whipped cream) that has been lightly whipped or foamed.
  • When the coffee has stopped swirling from stirring in the sugar, pour the foamy cream over the back of a spoon.
