Did you know that April 6th is known as New Beer's Eve? It's true! This holiday celebrates the end of prohibition, when Americans were finally able to celebrate with a cold beer. April 6th is really about the celebration of freedom; the freedom to choose to drink alcohol. Prohibition suspended this right for thirteen long years; 1920-1933. Any and all forms of alcohol were declared illegal. Could YOU go without alcohol for one year, never mind 13?!

How did New Beer's Eve come to be? It all started on April Fool's Day in 1933. That was the day that U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt signed into law the Cullen-Harrison Act, which legalized the sale of beer and wine with an alcohol content of up to 3.2%. On this date in 1933, it is recorded that the people lined up around the block at the doors of their favorite bars and pubs as they prepared to indulge in legal brews and spirits for the first time in 13 years. Ever since that night, this day has been referred to as 'New Beer's Eve', a precursor of 'New Beer's Day'. According to the Brewers Association, 1.5 million barrels of beer were snapped open in the first 24 hours of the announcement.

"Happy Days are Beer Again!"
