Description

The 2016 Chateau Kefraya, the estate red (but not the very top wine), is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cinsault, all aged for 24 months in 32% new French oak, 47% used French oak, 16% stainless steel and 5% amphorae. It comes in at 14.4% alcohol. This is sourced from 27-year-old vines at 940 to 1,100 meters in altitude. As compared to its 2016 sibling, this is very similar on paper - except for the extra Cabernet Franc. Which you like better might mostly depend on how you feel about Cabernet Franc. It is still a small part of the whole, but this is a bit more olive-coated and complex. It is equally concentrated but perhaps more precise. The structure is as good or better. The 2015 made me want to be a bit cautious, but here I'd lean up a little in anticipation of this reaching its potential. It is not at peak yet, although it is certainly easily drinkable. It should be in a great place around 2023. It is fair to say that the 2015 benefits from an extra year of bottle aging that gives it a bit more harmony and a few less jagged edges, but this looks like it will ultimately be the better wine just now. It should age throughout the decade, more or less. Drink date: 2021-2030. Score - 90. (Mark Squires, robertparker.com, Jan. 29, 2021)
