Abbona Rinaldi Barbera D'Alba 2010: Aromas of briar, pipe tobacco and cherry permeate this rich, smooth red. There's a touch of alcohol in the overall balance, but this remains long and fresh. Drink now through 2015. Score - 89. (Bruce Sanderson, winespectator.com, Nov. 15, 2012)

Deep purple in colour, it displays elegant aromas of ripe black cherry, plum, tobacco and hints of new oak. It's medium bodied, with deep, dark fruit flavours balanced by lively acidity and soft tannins. Enjoy with tomato-based pasta, chicken marengo, or a meat-and-cheese antipasto platter.

C? Nova Bric De Maschi Barbera D'Alba Superiore 2007: Here's a very successful expression of Barbera from the Alba zone of Piedmont with bright fruit tones followed by smooth spice, chocolate and tobacco. Ca' Dei Mandorli La Bellalda Barbera D'Asti 2010: Barbera packs the one-two punch of plenty of robust fruit, plus a refreshing rush of acidity. No wonder it's a natural with flavourful foods.

Demarie Barbera D'Alba Superiore 2007: Pretty, very approachable Barbera with aromas of blackberry, raspberry, a hint of blueberry and a touch of vanilla. Dry and rather fruity with a touch of acidity to give the whole package some lift. A bit of age gives it added complexity so it is ready to drink now with grilled lamb chops.
