Celebrating the Birth of the Beer Can

The “official” birthday of the beer can is January 24, 1935. On this day, the American Can Company partnered with the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company to make history. Krueger’s Special Beer became the world’s first commercially sold canned beer, forever changing how beer was packaged and enjoyed.

🛠️ Early Beer Can Design
The first beer cans were made of steel and weighed nearly 4 ounces each. Opening them required a church key - a pointed can opener used to puncture the lid.

📅 Key Milestones

  • 🧲 1963: Pull-tab pop-tops were introduced

  • ♻️ 1975: Stay-tabs replaced pull-tabs, reducing litter and safety concerns
