The “official” birthday of the beer can is January 24, 1935. The American Can Company approached the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company in Richmond, Virginia beer and offered them a historic deal that benefitted both companies; Krueger’s Special Beer became the world’s first beer can.

The initial version of beer cans was made of steel that weighs in at almost 4 ounces. A church key was made to open up these hefty canisters. Only after 1963, the pop-tops (pull tabs) were fixed on the top of the beer cans to open it. It wasn’t until 1975 that stay tabs made their debut in the canning industry, eliminating the litter/endangerment issues caused by pull-tabs.

Canned beers turned out to be profitable!!!  Cans are cheaper than glass bottles. And canning prevents beer from reacting to light and the seal is more durable compared to bottled beer.

This aluminum vessel not only preserves the freshness of beer but also revolutionized the beverage industry, providing a convenient and portable way for people to enjoy their favorite brews. The beer can's popularity soared, transforming the way we consume and share this beloved beverage.

The best way to celebrate today is by grabbing a can of your favourite beer and cracking one open! Happy bday can!
