🍹🌴 Celebrate National Mai Tai Day - August 30th

A toast to tropical vibes, tiki dreams, and one legendary cocktail.

Every year on August 30th, we raise our glasses to the Mai Tai - the iconic tiki cocktail that transports you straight to a beachside paradise with just one sip.

Invented in the 1940s by the legendary Trader Vic (Victor J. Bergeron), the Mai Tai quickly became the crown jewel of tiki culture, delivering island flavours and vacation vibes in every glass. It’s more than just a cocktail - it’s a getaway in a glass.

🍍 What Makes a Mai Tai Magic?

A true Mai Tai is a delicious dance of citrus, almond, and rum. Here’s what goes into the classic:

Ingredients:

  • Light rum & dark rum

  • Fresh lime juice

  • Orange curaçao

  • Orgeat syrup (almond-based)

  • Optional: simple syrup, pineapple juice, or grenadine (in modern variations)

How It’s Made:

Shake it all up with ice, strain into a glass packed with crushed ice, and top with a lime wheel, fresh mint, and of course — a little paper umbrella for full tiki flair.

The Flavour Vibe:

Sweet, tangy, nutty, and rich - the Mai Tai strikes a perfect balance. The layered rums bring depth, the citrus adds brightness, and the orgeat rounds it out with a smooth, tropical finish.

🌺 A Sip of Tiki History

The Mai Tai was born in California but inspired by the flavours and fantasy of the South Pacific. It became the signature drink of the mid-20th century tiki bar movement, served in bamboo mugs and garnished with exotic flair.

And like many great cocktails, the Mai Tai has a bit of controversy - other bartenders have claimed to be the original creators, but Trader Vic’s version remains the gold standard for purists.

🍹 Why We Love It

The Mai Tai isn’t just a drink - it’s a mood. It’s perfect for beach days, backyard BBQs, tiki parties, or just a Wednesday night that needs a little island energy.

So whether you’re mixing one up at home or ordering it at your favourite bar, don’t forget to raise your glass and say:

“Mai Tai roa ae!”
(Tahitian for “Out of this world - the best!”)
